Scout Day coming to Roscoe Village

Roscoe Village, the Coshocton Foundation and the Muskingum Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America have joined together to bring Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to an exciting and educational day at Roscoe Village.  Saturday, August 19th, any Scouts and family members will be admitted, at a greatly discounted price, for 'Scout Day at Roscoe Village'.

The $10 fee will include the Roscoe Village living history tour, two pioneer crafts, admission to the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum, a canal boat ride and a commemorative patch.   This is a $30 value underwritten by a generous grant from the Coshocton Foundation.  Adults may attend for $5.00 but will not do the crafts or receive a patch.

Starting at the visitor center, Scouts will view detailed dioramas, intricate maps, and models of the canal and lock system and a working gristmill. Next, ‘Ditches of Destiny’, a movie explaining the historic impact of the Ohio canal system, will start their tour placing scouts back in time with the rest of Roscoe Village.

The living history tour includes visits to the Blacksmith shop, the Canal Toll house, the Haycraft, Roscoe School, Craftsman House, a canal boat exhibit and a chance to visit Dr. Maro Johnson's office to see the state of medicine back in the day - scary.  Along the way, there are many shops to explore.

The Canal Boat charters will be another highlight of the day, as will the visit to the Johnson-Humrickhouse museum full of tools, and weaponry from prehistoric times to the 19th century.

Ed Mulholland, Executive Director of the Local Boy Scouts explained their involvement: "We are very excited to partner with the Coshocton Foundation and Roscoe Village to make this day possible for Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts.  Many of our Scouting families have never visited Roscoe and they are missing such a wonderfully educational experience.  Others have visited but few have been able to participate in the entire experience including the canal boat ride.  With the foundation's help, we will be introducing many families to Roscoe for the first time."

Many of the visiting Scouts will camp Friday and/or Saturday at the Muskingum Valley Scout Reservation just a few miles south of Coshocton.  Call the Muskingum Valley Council Service Center; 740-453-0571, to reserve your tent camping site or cabin. Scouts should wear their uniforms to receive the discounted price at Roscoe.  Check in at the welcome center to receive your participant wristband. Walk-ins are welcome but Scouting Units or families may wish to pre-register by visiting www.mvcbsa.org  This will speed you through registration when you arrive.  Learn more about Roscoe Village at their website: www.roscoevillage.com
